Account executive interview questions and preparation

An account executive interview is assessed on four things: whether you can generate and qualify pipeline, whether you can run a structured discovery conversation, whether you can handle objections without discounting, and whether your numbers hold up under questioning.

What does an account executive interview assess?

Your commercial numbers, your sales process, how you think about buyers, and whether you can sell in the room — because the interview itself is a demonstration.

  • Quota history and attainment, with the context behind it
  • Where your pipeline came from and how much you self-generated
  • Discovery: the questions you ask and why
  • Objection handling and negotiation without reflex discounting
  • Deal management: multithreading, mutual close plans, forecasting

What numbers should you bring to a sales interview?

Quota and attainment for the last two or three years, average deal size, sales cycle length, win rate and the proportion of pipeline you sourced yourself.

Know them without checking, and be ready to explain a bad year honestly. Interviewers respect a candidate who can explain a missed number better than one whose figures are suspiciously clean.

What discovery questions do interviewers ask about?

They will ask how you open a first call, how you find the compelling event, and how you qualify out.

Have your first five discovery questions ready verbatim. Being able to recite them proves you have a process rather than a personality.

Example

"I always ask what happens if they do nothing this year. If nobody can answer that, there's no compelling event and I'd rather find out in week one than in the forecast."

How do you answer questions about missing quota?

State the number, give the cause in one sentence, say what you changed, and give the result afterwards.

Example

"I hit 82% in 2025. Two of my three largest accounts were in a sector that froze spend in Q2, and I'd let my pipeline get too concentrated. I rebuilt on a rule of no more than 20% of pipeline in one sector and went back above quota in the next two quarters."

What behavioural questions come up in AE interviews?

Losing a deal you expected to win, a deal you saved, working with a difficult buyer, and a time you walked away.

Should you bring a 30-60-90 day plan?

For mid-market and enterprise AE roles, yes — a single page, brought to the second interview or later, focused on learning, territory and first pipeline.

Keep it modest. A plan that claims closed revenue in the first thirty days reads as naive to anyone who knows their sales cycle.

What questions should you ask a VP of Sales?

Ask about quota attainment across the team, ramp time, where pipeline comes from, and why the last person in the seat left.

  • What percentage of the team hit quota last year?
  • How long is ramp, and what does month six look like?
  • What split of pipeline is self-generated versus marketing?
  • What has made new AEs here fail?

Frequently asked questions

What questions are asked in an account executive interview?
A mix of commercial questions about quota, pipeline and deal size, process questions about discovery and objection handling, and behavioural questions about deals won, lost and saved.
How should I prepare for a sales interview?
Know your numbers cold, write out your discovery questions, prepare three deals in detail — one won, one lost, one saved — and research how the employer actually sells.
Do AE interviews include a mock pitch?
Frequently, from the second stage onwards. You are usually given the employer's own product and a short brief; discovery before pitching scores better than a polished monologue.
What metrics matter most?
Attainment against quota, self-sourced pipeline and win rate. Activity metrics matter less at AE level than at SDR level.
