How to answer "what are your strengths?"
Name two or three strengths that appear in the job description, and prove each one with a single specific piece of evidence. An unproven strength is just an adjective, and interviewers discount adjectives.

How many strengths should you give?
Two, or three at most. More than that and none of them land.
How do you choose which strengths to name?
Take them from the job description. The requirements listed there are the strengths the interviewer has been asked to look for.
If the advert leads with stakeholder management and commercial judgement, those are the two to lead with — assuming you can prove them.
How do you prove a strength?
One sentence of evidence per strength: what you did and what changed because of it.
Example
"Two things. The first is turning messy processes into something repeatable — I rebuilt our onboarding from eleven days to four and it's still running that way two years later. The second is working with people who don't report to me; most of that project was persuading risk and support to give up approvals they'd held for years, and we got there without escalating once."What strengths should you avoid naming?
Hard-working, passionate, a people person, a fast learner — claims everyone makes and no one can verify.
What if your strengths do not match the job description?
Name the closest genuine strength and show how it transfers, with evidence. Do not claim a strength you cannot back up under follow-up questions.
Frequently asked questions
- Should my strengths be technical or personal?
- Mix them: one about the craft of the job and one about how you work with people. Most roles are assessed on both.
- How long should the answer be?
- Forty-five seconds to a minute for two strengths with evidence.
- Is it arrogant to state strengths plainly?
- No. Evidence keeps it factual. Understating is a far more common and more costly mistake.
- What if they ask for just one strength?
- Give the one that best matches the top requirement in the advert, and prove it properly rather than listing others.
