How to answer "what is your greatest weakness?"
Name a real weakness that is not one of the job's core requirements, describe how it actually shows up in your work, and finish with the specific thing you now do to manage it. Self-awareness is what is being scored, not the weakness itself.

Why do interviewers ask about weaknesses?
To test self-awareness and honesty. People who cannot name a weakness are usually harder to manage and slower to improve.
A well-handled answer also tells the interviewer you can take feedback, which is one of the hardest things to assess in an hour.
How do you choose which weakness to give?
Pick something real, true, and not named in the first three bullets of the job description.
- Real — something a former manager has actually raised with you
- Survivable — you have done the job well in spite of it
- Not central — do not name attention to detail for an audit role
- Improvable — you can point to what you changed
What does a strong answer sound like?
Weakness, how it shows up, what you do about it now — in about forty-five seconds.
Example
"I take on too much myself. When a project is behind, my instinct is to pick up the work rather than hand it out, and I've had feedback that it slows the team's development. What I do now is name the owner for every workstream at the start, in writing, so there's no ambiguity about whose it is — and I check in rather than take over. It's still the thing I have to watch, but it's visible to me now in a way it wasn't two years ago."What answers should you avoid?
Disguised strengths — perfectionism, working too hard, caring too much — and anything that makes you unemployable for this role.
Interviewers hear "I'm a perfectionist" several times a week. It reads as evasion, and evasion is a worse signal than the weakness would have been.
Should you mention a weakness you have already fixed?
Only if you are honest that it still takes effort. "I used to be bad at X and now I am fine" is heard as another dodge.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best weakness to say in an interview?
- The one that is genuinely true of you and not central to the job, described with what you now do about it. There is no universally safe answer, because a safe weakness for one role is disqualifying in another.
- Can I say I have no weaknesses?
- No. It is the single worst answer available, because it fails the test being run.
- How long should the answer be?
- Thirty to forty-five seconds. Do not linger.
- Will they hold the weakness against me?
- Rarely, provided it is not a core requirement. Interviewers mark down evasion far more often than they mark down honesty.
